Catasetum Shanelle Girl

Several months ago, I acquired this young orchid from Mr. Shinmun Lee, a friend and orchid enthusiast who runs a beautiful nursery. One of the many places I hang out at when I urgently need to de-stress, think or just be surrounded by green.
Shanelle Girl came with a responsibility. You see, Shinmun named this hybrid after the apple of his eye, "Shanelle".....his daughter. Currently there are only 3 people in the world who possess this orchid....and I happen to be one of them! Talk about pressure. (Now I know how Dr.Liau felt when he was presented with a 5 year old Cherry Blossom bonsai from Japan).
With a lot of care and constant monitoring, my catasetum finally developed buds and bloomed. What a relief....and what joy. Not only does this amazing hybrid have beautifully structured blooms, it also has one of the best fragrances I have ever come across in an orchid.

That is amazing Moggie, it's also beautiful. We have quite a collection of orchids as well but none as exotic and rare as this.
Great job caring for it....shows great patience and care.

Catasetums,a native of South America has two interesting and distinctive characteristic.First, they have a unique pollination mechanism, and this never fail to pique the curiosity of orchid lovers. When one's finger touches a hair-trigger on the column, the flower expels it's pollinia in a flash, startling the first time observer.Secondly they produce male and female flower.Special technique is required to induce the plant to produce female flower and to preserve the male flower's pollinia. This explained why there is not many hybrid of this genera in the market.
For Catasetum Shanelle Girl i picked Ctsm.tenebrosum (a species) for it's unique black color. The other parent,Ctsm.Memoria Kampar Yip was named in memory of Mr.Yip from Kampar who was a renowned species collector. The seeds were sprinkle on a coconut tree for gemination and lucky to have a few plants. That's why this is a rare hybrid and i am happy Andy had taken good care of Shanelle Girl.
