heteropteryx dilatata.

Kg. Ulu Geroh. (Pt.2)

This perfect specimen is a subadult female. The females grow a lot bigger than this and are much bigger than the males. When threatened, the females will make a loud hissing sound with her small wings, curl her abdomen up over her back (like a scorpion would with it's tail in a striking pose) and move her two rear legs in a scissor like motion to scratch her attacker.

(The reason i handle some of these insects is for size comparison. Please do not pick up or handle any wildlife unless you have a thorough understanding of it or are under the supervision of a professional.)

Very nice pics of the specimens. Looks like you can start off a 'kopi' table book with the photos and description of the wildlife.

Oh my God! Moggie, now my kids are using your site as a slide show for the neighbour's kids! They spend a lot of time around the garden looking for insects! .....sigh!! Great photos.

Wah moggie branching out from mantis to phasmid
So did that phasmid make a loud hissing sound with her small wings, curl her abdomen up over her back when you picked her up? or did she attempted to hitch a ride on your back as well? hehe ;)

Great series of pictures mogs.
